VPNs and DSL/Cable/Broadband routers
With the Microsoft L2TP/NAT-T IPSec update (installed seperately or included with Windows XP service pack 2), VPNs from behind broadband routers have a higher success rate.

Due to the variety of broadband routers, only general recommendations can be made. Users may wish to add their own experiences.

Before trying to establish a VPN, make sure the basic router functionality works. Can you browse the public Internet? Did you try a few sites? Do not even attempt a VPN until this works.

After installing the VPN client and meeting all prerequisites, if the VPN doesn't "just work" try the following.

 1) Get the latest firmware for the router.
 2) Enable ipsec passthrough.
 3) Use a different private IP network, ie choose something other than 192.168.0.0.
