CBR – Circuit Breaker Recorder

Substation circuit breakers are crucial to the proper and safe delivery of electrical power to millions of customers. Failure to operate correctly can lead to loss of revenue, expensive repair costs, increased labor costs, extended downtime, and increased liability risk.

Substation circuit breakers must open within a few milliseconds, close on command, and continuously transfer power for the duration of their service life. Most failures are preceded by a measurable deterioration of the breaker operating mechanism.

The CBR technology measures and assesses the breaker components during each beaker operation.

The benefits the CBR provides are:

  • Migration from issue driven maintenance to predictive maintenance
  • Reduce breaker offline maintenance
  • Reduce the time to mitigate
  • Reduce the risk of failure
  • Reduce unplanned labor requirements
  • Reduce overall maintenance labor costs
  • Reduce the probability of human error
  • Increase the operating life of breakers
  • Improve customer’s power service reliability
  • Improve customer satisfaction

The CBOLM is a permanently mounted CBR enabled device. It continuously monitors key components and behaviors, logging every operation event. These events are automatically sent to a central server, automatically mathematically analyzed, and the user notified of anomalous events.

The CBA is a portable model incorporating CBR technology. The CBA can be moved from breaker to breaker for an instantaneous snapshot of the breaker’s performance characteristics and later analyzed for health.
